    Optimum canegrub management within new sustainable cropping systems : SRDC final report BSS266

    This project addressed the issue of canegrub management in new farming systems. Many cane growers are adopting or planning to adopt one or more components of 'new farming systems' - legume rotations, reduced tillage and controlled traffic - to improve the profitability and sustainability of their farms. Canegrubs can be a constraint on cane productivity in conventional systems if not managed appropriately. Changes to farming systems could have positive or negative impacts on canegrub populations and the damage they cause, and may require changes to management tactics.

    A new cropping system for the Central district : SRDC Final report BSS269

    The project aimed to facilitate establishment of new cropping system trials with both existing and new productivity groups by providing equipment and technical guidance; develop best practice guidelines for dual-row cropping systems; develop 'cost of production comparison models' and a 'system change-over kit' to facilitate decision making and system change; monitor and evaluate the environmental performance of the system in terms of run-off water quality; target 1000 ha planted under the new cropping system by 2008; and conduct state-wide extension in year 4. The activities undertaken to meet these objectives are discussed.

    Developing an integrated cropping-systems RD&E program for the sugar industry

    Sugarcane trash is used extensively as garden mulch in an industry with a value in excess of $20 million per annum. The incursion of sugarcane smut has complicated the movement of trash by companies that provide sugarcane mulch products,this assessment considers the survival of smut spores in relation to the proposal to store baled trash until there was a low risk of viable spores being present.The project aimed to develop industry-wide integration of cropping-systems RD&E to maximise effectiveness and efficiency of RD&E expenditure and expertise.
