    Analysis of sugarcane productivity trends in the wet tropics at a district level : SRDC final report

    This project provided an in-depth re-analysis of district level data for cane yield, sugar content, and sugar content per hectare for the mill districts of Mulgrave, Babinda, and Tully and an evaluation of the estimates of changes in productivity for the period from 1958 to 1995, as derived by Leslie and Wilson (1996). Restricted Maximum Likelihood (REML) methodology (Patterson and Thompson, 1971) was shown to be applicable to the analysis of productivity data at the district level. Importantly, this methodology can now be implemented with readily available computer software (Gilmour et al., 1996). Its capacity to deal with unbalanced data sets (varieties change over time and across districts) is particularly useful. REML enables a more rigorous and complete estimation of productivity trends over time when adjusting for variety and variety  environment interactions than previously used methods. For the period under investigation, some of the increased cane yield (tonnes of sugarcane per hectare) was due to improved varieties while the decrease in sugar content was due to other factors. As a result, sugar content per hectare remained relatively stable during this time.

    Facilitate the accessibility of productivity data by sugarcane farm managers through the SUGARSCAPE productivity software application : SRDC Final report BSS248

    Utilising previous research outcomes, a utility was added to the SUGARSCAPE software application to export productivity data and farm map data to common file types. The purpose of this export utility was to provide a method of importing seasonal data into the CANEMAN? block recording software application.The export utility integrates the SUGARSCAPE productivity software and the CANEMAN farm block recording software. Cane farm managers are now able to import their seasonal productivity data in one simple step. Not only does this utility decrease the amount of time required to update their CANEMAN records; the data imported will have far greater accuracy than manually imported data. The export procedure also provides access to a farm map, if map data are available for that farm.All project objectives were met. Recommendations for further research involve investing time in the ongoing maintenance of the software application to keep up with the dynamic environment of data collection and dissemination within the sugar industry.

    An integrated decision support system (DSS) to improve the utilisation of productivity data by extension, research and productivity programs : final report BS182S

    Utilising previous research outcomes, a software application titled SUGARSCAPE was developed to provide extension, research and productivity staff within the Australian sugar industry a means of collating block and farm productivity data.The original concept was to assist extension, research and productivity staff with the production of productivity reports through a suitably designed software application. The application designed by this project increased the scope of previously available productivity report options, and also included a spatial reporting component. Over a period of three years a software application was developed and trialed by a user group. This ensured the end result was derived by the needs of the industry. Towards the end of the project Bureau of Sugar Experiment Stations (BSES) extension staff participated in training sessions using the software application on their own computers; feedback was documented on evaluation forms and will be used as guidelines for further research. To date the software has been received enthusiastically. To assist users a user manual and on-line help documentation have been created and will be distributed with the software application.With the exception of one objective, all project objectives were met. Most of the recommendations for further research have already been undertaken through another Sugar Research and Development Corporation (SRDC) project titled ?Facilitate the accessibility of productivity data by sugarcane farm managers through the SUGARSCAPE productivity software application.? This project will be completed by July 2001.
